Volleyball squads announced

NAMIBIA Volleyball Federation (NVF) national team coaches have called up men's and women's teams after holding national trials in Windhoek last weekend. The two national team coaches, Joel Matheus (men) and Dirkie Beukes (women), have called Namibia's top 18 players for a tournament before the end of the season. Matheus told The Namibian Sport that the teams will compete in friendly matches against South Africa and Botswana in October.
The two teams will also prepare for the Zone Six National Championships next year, which will be held in South Africa. In 2007, the Namibian men's team came sixth in the Zone Six National Championships, while the women's team came fifth overall at Walvis Bay. Those games will according to Matheus only be confirmed at the Zone Six Club Championships, which also be in South Africa.

The following players have been selected for the national team training squads:

Men: Rehabeam Hengari, Rector Mbeha, Joseph Amakali, Andreas Engombe, Gotthard Husselmann, Rehabeam Nandjala, Andreas Lukolo, Donald Doeseb, Pinehas Nahambo, Jacob Uukongo, Eddy Uyepa, Eliphas Nangolo, Reginald Wenzel, Mwita Sikopo, Willem Haimbodi, Ettiene Mouton, Heiko Diehl and Fillemon Amupadhi.
The women are: Marjata Ashiwa, Esme du Plessis, Sylvia Nampala, Tuyeimo Sheehama, Ruusa Alundhilu, Leigh Dunn, Helena Angula, Lea Angula,
Rosemary Roethel, Simone von Wietersheim, Aleta Hamhola, Ndinelago Kasheeta, Albertina Alfeus, Mavis Tshiwalo, Martha Andreas, Monica Dan, Albertina Theophilus, Sabine Pampe and Silke Schneider.

* Meanwhile, volleyball for the disabled will for the first time be introduced in Namibia next year.
Disabled Sport Namibia (DSN) Volleyball Director Rudi Bowe said at the weekend that Namibia was in the process of affiliating to the World Organization for Disabled Volleyball. Once everything is finalized, the new sport will be introduced in February 2009 in all the country's 13 regions. Bowe said volleyball for the disabled is played on a small court, and with six players on a side.

News July 2008

Recent events:

The 28th June has passed and the last matches of the first round have taken place.

Ladies

SKW vs EWVC 3:0 (25:12 / 25:13 / 25:12)

The first match off the day, SKW against Eleven Warriors, took place at Luiperdsvalley at 8h15. For SKW, it was an optimal match to prepare for our second game of the day against Nampol. EWVC returned many of our services and attacks, as such we had the opportunity to warm up and get into Volleyball-mood without exhausting ourselves.

SKW vs KNVC 3:0 (25:14 / 25:23 / 25:21)

KPVC (Khomas Police – Nampol) and NDF are the strongest opponents of the league, so SKW had to pull up their socks for this encounter. As expected, it was a tough match and especially during the third set SKW had difficulties to keep up with the excellent play of Nampol. SKW got of to a bad start in the third set and found itself 12:18 down with little suggestion of a fight back. Coach Epifanio, called for a time out and gave his charges a stern talking to. When play resumed, it was as though a different team had taken the field. They fought back to trail by only two points, 17:19 and then closed out the match with some strong spiking from substitute Tina Demtschuk.

SKW vs SSVC

This match had to be postphoned due to an unfortunate accident – the driver of 6 Stars had a fatal car accident.

Spikers: Wiebke Höritzauer, Silke Schneider, Krisztina Demtschuk

Blockers: Rosi Röthel, Simone von Wietersheim, Inka Heiser

Utility: Teja Lück

Setter: Sabine Pampe (Captain)

Coach :Antero Epifanio

Men

SKW vs EWVC 3:0 (25:18 / 25:15 / 25:15)

Last seasons defeat to Eleven Warriors (2:3) eventually cost SKW the league thus the men’s team had a score to settle when they met Eleven Warriors in this years first round match. Although Eleven Warriors did not boast such a strong team as last year, SKW made absolutely sure not to commit the same mistake again and send them packing without loosing a set.

SKW vs OVC 3:1 (25:8 / 23:25 / 25:18 / 25:10)

After the convincing win against Eleven Warriors, SKW got off to a flying start against their next rivals, Otter VC, taking the first set without raising a sweat. With everybody expecting SKW to perform a demolition job in the next set, they dropped their concentration and ended up loosing the set by the closest of margins. After this wake-up call SKW managed to raise their game again but were still made to fight hard for victory in the third set. Although they provided some good competition Otter FC could not stage a fight back and SKW ran out comfortable winners. One would hope that the lost set does not impact on the log standing at the end of the season.

SKW vs SSVC

The match was postphoned for the same reasons as the ladies game.

Spikers:               Achim Lück, Rector Mbeha,

Dmitry Teplashov (1st match) / Antero Epifanio (2nd match)

Blockers: Mwita Sikopo, Walla Katjiveri

Utility:     Heiko Diehl

Setter:    Kamwi Sezuni (Captain)

Coach:    Achim Lück

News June 2008

June newsletter only available in middle June, the reason being a quiet season. The ladies had two matches since the last newsletter update in May, the men only one.

Ladies league

SKW vs Elegance 3:1 (25:15/ 25:18/ 18:25/ 25:19)

The first ladies match took place at Nampol on 31 May 2008 in the early morning hours. SKW vs Elegance, a rescheduled match from the 24th May 2008.

Spikers: Petra Oesterle, Silke Schneider, Kirztina Demtschuk

Blockers: Wiebce Höritzauer, Rosi Röthel, Inka Heiser

Utility: Teja Lück, Sylvia Neuburg

Setter: Sabine Pampe (Captain)

Coach :Antero Epifanio

The match started at 7h30, the first two sets took 21 min and 20 min respectively and SKW Won 25:15 and 25:18. The third set commenced but somehow SKW could not continue with the same energy as during the first two sets (with the minds already at home?).  So SKW  lost the set 25:18 to Elegance unnecessarily. SKW reassembled their team spirit and playing skills and ended the game with a 25:19 win over Elegance.

Final score thus 3:1 for SKW.

SKW vs NDF 2:3 (25:23/ 16:25/ 20:25/ 25:15/ 14:16)

The second ladies match took place at Luiperdsvalley on 11th June 2008, SKW vs. Namibian Defence Force (NDF).

Spikers: Wiebce Höritzauer, Silke Schneider, Kriztina Demtschuk

Blockers: Simone von Wietersheim, Rosi Röthel, Inka Heiser

Utility: Teja Lück, Wiebce Höritzauer, Sylvia Neuburg

Setter: Sabine Pampe (Captain)

Coach: Antero Epifanio

NDF is one of the strongest teams in the league and always a challenge. There setter is outstanding and the pillar of the team. SKW started off on a high note and won the first set 25:23. Halfway through the second set, the concentration levels dropped and the team could not rebuild the spirits. The set was lost 16:25 to NDF. The down was carried over to the third set, no come back could be achieved and NDF won 25:20. Finally, during the fourth set SKW had their fighting spirit back and beat NDF 25:15. I must admit, SKW had a slight advantage that helped us to reorganize ourselves… The brilliant NDF Setter was injured and had to be replaced for half of the set. The 5th set commenced and it was a real battle for victory. NDF took the match with a very close win of 16:14. This was most probably one of the best ladies matches in a long time.

Men’s league

SKW vs NNVS (25:14/ 25:14/ 25:20)

As mentioned above, the men only had one match which took place on 21 June 2008 against Northern Namibia Volleyball Society (NNVS) at Nampol.

Spiker: Antero Epifanio, Rector Mbeha, Martin Degele

Blocker: Mwita Sikopo, Walla Katjiveri

Utility:Achim Lück

Setter: Kamwi Sezuni (Captain)

Libero: Heiko Diehl

Coach: Achim Lück

The match was short and sweet and the SKW men barely sweat. SKW won 25:14, 25:14, 25:20, therefore a clear 3:0 win over NNVS.

SKW on Volleyball Warpath                                  New Era By Staff Reporter

Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) men’s volleyball team are hot favourites to walk away with the coveted league trophy in the National Volleyball League if their splendid performance in last weekend’s league matches is anything to go by.
The Germans made short work of a depleted Golden Rivers outfit that lost the bulk of their playing personnel to their wealthy cross-town rivals at the beginning of the current league campaign. Revivals’ former players led by Mwita Sikopo, Rector Mbeha and Kamwi Sezuni have all crossed the floor and are now playing in the green and white colours of SKW. The trio could not have wished for a better

SKW Defend Title in Namibia’s Most Prestigious Volleyball Event

The SKW Volleyball team defended their title in the Doc Tournament in Walvisbay last weekend. SKW dominated against NDF A in the final, beating them 3:0 in fine style to lift the Men’s trophy again. Khomas Nampol beat DTS to win the ladies competition.

Last year at the Doc Tournament, SKW had their big break though, winning the tournament against all expectations. Since then SKW has established itself as the team to beat, coming closed second in the National Premier League and winning the National Club Championships in 2007.

As a result, SKW also pocketed various awards last year, winning the Team of the year awards of the Namibian Volleyball Federation and the Sport Klub Windhoek.  more
