SKW GYMNASTS TRIUMPH IN JOHANNESBURG

 

This week, the SKW Rhythmic Gymnasts returned triumphant from the Jozi International Rhythmic Gymnastics Competition. The event was held at Wits University in Johannesburg and was attended by gymnasts from South Africa, Namibia, Germany, Malaysia, Zimbabwe and the Ukraine.

 

In the Infant Category, Veronica Lepekha won the Bronze Medal for her Free Dance routine and was awarded the Bronze Trophy for achieving third place in the Overall Competition.

 

In the Pre-Junior category Nadia Reichstein won Silver for Rope and Hoop and Bronze Medals for her Ball and Ribbon Routines. She was awarded the Silver Trophy for the second place in the Overall Competition. Michelle Bierbach achieved the 4th place for her Hoop and Ball routines and won Silver for Ribbon and Bronze for her Rope routine. She was awarded the Bronze Trophy for third place in the Overall Competition. Maike Brandt followed closely with the 4th place for her Rope and Ribbon routines, Bronze for Hoop and Silver for her Ball routine.

 

The Junior Olympic Overall Competition proved to be one of the toughest of the event, with 26 participants vying for the top 3 places in the first day of competition. Ida Steenkamp finished 6th overall, Aldi Truter finished in the eleventh position and Nicole Bierbach was awarded the Silver Trophy for the Second Place Overall. The Top 8 scorers in each apparatus also qualified to compete in the Apparatus Finals on Day Two of the competition.

Aldi Truter finished 8th in the Hoop Finals, while Ida Steenkamp achieved the 7th Place in the Rope and 5th Place in the Ribbon Finals. Nicole Bierbach attained 4th Place in the Ball Finals and was awarded the Silver Medal for the Rope Final. She went on to consolidate her success by winning the Gold Medals for both the Hoop and Ribbon Finals.

 

The SKW Gymnasts and their National Coach, Angela Lepekha, were commended by the International Coaches and Judges for their high standard of gymnastics.
